Golf Courses

The Full Story

Golf courses provide an ideal environment for red imported fire ants, thanks to the fertile soil, high moisture content, and open, sunny areas that they thrive in. These pests often nest along fairways, bunkers, greens, and roughs, creating hazards for both golfers and spectators.

Fire ants are not just an inconvenience—they can cause serious harm. When a mound is disturbed, hundreds of ants can swarm out, stinging repeatedly. While many people experience only mild pain and swelling, a small number of individuals may suffer from severe allergic reactions, potentially leading to anaphylactic shock, which can be life-threatening without prompt medical intervention.

In addition to posing a health risk, fire ants can also cause significant damage to the infrastructure of the golf course. They are drawn to electrical equipment, including lights, transformer boxes, and irrigation systems, where they can nest and cause malfunctions, leading to costly repairs and downtime.

Fire Ant Control of Texas offers a targeted solution to address these issues. Our proven treatment method focuses on sterilizing and eliminating the queen, which stops the colony from reproducing and reduces the overall fire ant population. Regular treatments are recommended to keep your course safe, functional, and free from fire ant hazards.

About Fire Ant Colonies

Red imported fire ants are notorious for building expansive nests, creating mounds of soil that can be as wide as dinner plates and about 10 inches tall. These mounds have no visible openings, but beneath them lies an intricate network of underground chambers and tunnels that extend outward and downward, sometimes reaching up to 30 feet. Worker ants traverse these tunnels to forage for food and protect the colony from threats.

At the heart of the colony is the fire ant queen, who acts as the colony’s egg-laying powerhouse. She resides deep within the underground network, where worker ants protect her from predators. The queen can lay 50-200 eggs per hour for up to seven years, ensuring the colony’s survival and growth. A single colony can host thousands of fire ants, with single-queen colonies having 40-150 mounds and around 7 million ants per acre. Multiple-queen colonies can have up to 200 mounds and 40 million ants per acre.

When fire ants infiltrate your golf course, they not only pose a risk to players but also damage the infrastructure. Mounds can disrupt greens, fairways, and bunkers, while swarming ants can cause painful stings and allergic reactions. The colonies can also nest in electrical equipment like lighting and irrigation systems, causing potential malfunctions and costly repairs.
